How Much Time Do You Spend on Laundry Per Week?
The average family of 4 completes 8-10 loads of laundry per week. Depending on how often the wash is done, the time spent will vary, but, on average at least 8-hours will be spent on washing, drying, and folding clothes.
You do have free time during the wash and dry cycle to do other things, however, the average load of laundry still takes 15-20 minutes to fold. At 8-10 loads that will take anywhere from 2-3 hours a week to complete. That is more time then most people spend per week on their lawn and how many households hire someone to maintain their yards?
During the wash and dry cycle, you’ll still want to be sure you are home in case a hose breaks on the washer ,you want to avoid a flood, or, with the dryer you want to make sure a fire doesn’t start. You might not be actively completing your laundry during that run time, but, your washer and dryer are keeping you restricted to your home during the 35-minute wash cycle and 55-minute dry cycle. At 8-10 loads per week that is a lot of free time spent inside the home.

How Much Does Your Laundry Cost?
If the average family of 4 completes 8-10 loads of laundry per week they are using a lot of water in the washer and a lot of energy with the dryer. Energy efficient units will save money and reduce waste but they still require a lot of water to properly wash and rinse residue from your clothes. Also, dryers must still consume energy to provide enough heat to efficiently dry clothes.
Over the course of a year, the average family will spend about $90 a year on water to wash their clothes. The electric or gas bill will be about $140 to run the dryer. Detergent to clean your clothes will run around $110 and your annual dryer vent cleaning costs you about $125.
You must also calculate the cost of the washer and dryer. Prices can vary on brand and size but, most people spend at least $1,000 for a washer and dryer set. According to Consumer Reports washers and dryers are designed to last ten years. That would make your annual cost to buy at least $100. Repairs will not be every year but certainly repairs will be needed. According to Home Advisor the average appliance repair cost is $170. If we plan on repairs and maintenance at 2-year intervals, that would place maintenance at $85 a year. Adding all these costs up per year the cost of completing your own laundry costs at least $650.
Also your time is valuable. At a minimum, you spend time folding. At the minimum 2-hours per week at $10 per hour that is $1040 a year in labor costs. So your total cost of completing laundry is at least $1690. At our cost per pound, that will take a while to reach. Out of all the housed services that can be outsourced, wash, dry, and fold is certainly economical and frees up the most time.
